2008 International Women’s Day Grants Program The Minister for Women, The Hon Verity Firth MP, recently approved funding to 122 NSW local councils and shires wishing to celebrate International Womens Day in their community. The grants provided an opportunity for councils to work with local community groups to recognise and celebrate local womens achievements and the contribution they continue to make to their area. This years theme was 100 years of active women in paid and unpaid work which recognised the countless contributions that women in NSW have made towards improving workplaces and working conditions, as well as their tireless volunteering work which has contributed to the growth of more vibrant and robust communities. Many issues of concern or inequalities are highlighted on International Womens Day, for example the ever increasing number of violent acts against women, both sexual assault and domestic violence; the small number of women in decision-making positions throughout the public and private sectors; the effect lower superannuation contributions have on womens financial independence; the difficulties experienced by women carers and working mothers, just to name a few. In 2006, 78 New South Wales councils and shires received funds and in 2007, 112 were funded to provide events such as breakfasts, barbeques, art exhibitions, workshops, information stalls and guest speakers to recognise and celebrate local womens achievements. A list of 2008 International Womens Day community events celebrations is being compiled as councils submit the details of their events and these can be found at http://www.women.nsw.gov.au/List_Councils/list_councils.htm
