Women’s Employment Rights Project

Partnership Project with the Inner City Legal Centre

The Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC) received one-off funding from OFW’s 2006/07 Partnerships Projects to conduct the Women’s Employment Rights Project (WERP).

The project contributes towards the NSW State Plan goal of ‘Growing Prosperity across NSW’, priority P1: ‘Increased business investment’ , ie by ‘supporting a working environment that is fair and collaborative – meaning NSW is a place where people want to do business and where people want to work’ (NSW State Plan, p89).

Through its extensive networks, the Inner City Legal Centre provided advice and training in employment law to advocates and agencies across NSW to assist vulnerable women.

Key achievements of the project include:

• Establishment of a 1800 statewide phone information and advice line for advocates on women’s employment rights
• Design and delivery of workshops across NSW for legal centres and community advocates
• Monitoring and documenting over 290 case studies regarding the impact of WorkChoices on NSW women
• Development of useful contacts/resource list for women
• Development of Fact Sheets on:

 Working Women: Industrial Relations in 2007 and beyond
 Termination of employment
 Unpaid wages
 Wages and conditions
 Employment documents
 Discrimination
 Worker’s compensation
 Workplace relations: abbreviations and acronyms

The facts sheets, useful contacts and the case studies are available on line at http://ww.iclc.org.au/werp. Advice Line – 1800 244 481
