Completing high school creates the platform from which to embark on further education and employment. It is a measure of achievement in itself: earnings and employment outcomes are significantly better for people who have completed Year 12 or its equivalent. Indicator 1.1 reports on Year 12 completion while Indicator 1.2 focuses on subject choice in the Higher School Certificate (HSC).

The section ends with a Focus Topic that examines the further education and employment experiences of girls who leave school early and do not complete Year 12. This group is the focus of specific attention in NSW 2021, the State Plan and is critical to redressing social disadvantage.
