The difference between what women and men earn, on average, is referred to as the gender pay gap. Pay gaps, whether driven by discrimination or other factors, compromise the current and future economic security of women and their families. There are many alternative ways to compare men’s and women’s earnings (for detail see Women in NSW 2012). Two commonly used standards – average weekly and average hourly earnings – comprise Indicators 5.1 and 5.2.
