On 7 March 2014, the eve of International Women’s Day, the 2014 NSW Women of the Year Awards were presented at a special reception at NSW Parliament House by NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Minister for Women Pru Goward. The Awards celebrate women of extraordinary drive, courage, compassion and persistence who took action where they saw an opportunity to strive for better.
“The winners of these awards are outstanding role models we can all look up to. The contribution these extraordinary women have made to our society deserves recognition,” Mr O’Farrell said.
Before an audience of more than 200 people, the 2014 NSW Women of the Year Awards, celebrated 78 local women, nominated by members of parliament for outstanding contributions to their community; four Community Heroes and four Young Women nominated by the public for their positive contributions to our community. These eight finalists drawn from more than 239 public nominations – the highest number of nominations received in the three-year history of the awards.
This year’s winners included Faten El Dana OAM from Mt Pritchard, the winner of the A.H.Beard ‘s Community Hero Award 2014, and Lakshmi Logathassan from Holsworthy, winner of Harvey Norman’s Young Woman of the Year Award 2014.
The 2014 NSW Women of the Year Awards also recognised four exceptional women shortlisted as the Premier’s Woman of the Year. Incredible women who have blazed new trails in areas where representation by women was low and achievement hard won.
The finalists in the Premier’s Award for Woman of the Year: Fiona Shewring, Fiona Simson, Mo’onia Gerrard and Turia Pitt have carved out successful roles in areas which are still almost exclusively male. In areas as diverse as trades, farming, mining engineering and professional sport, they’ve cleared the path for others to follow. Turia Pitt was announced winner of the Premier’s Award for Woman of the Year.
To all the women who were nominated, we are extremely grateful for your efforts and for allowing us to share your journeys and achievements.
